Here is the start of another year. A fresh new year to start on an unblemished piece of solid matter. And with that year in creep those pesky little 'resolutions'. I say, who needs them? While I believe that resolutions get you to move in either direction you ultimately choose, they also place unnecessary pressure to "do or not do" something. Why all the fuss? Everyday gives us the opportunity to pick up our pen and start to write. Each new day is a fresh start. It doesn't have to fall on the first day of a new year! Whether you want to whip up ten pages of that novel per day or ten minutes of writing everyday, it doesn't matter so long as you're doing just that, writing! So in lieu of 'resolutions', I say, just find 'solutions' to your writing woes. It's that simple. At the end of the day, we writers really don't need more pressure to put on ourselves about what we 'did' or 'didn't' get done that day. Just as you bring yourself to shower everyday, eat everyday, sleep everyday, rest everyday, whatever it is that you choose to do, so you can choose to write everyday without the pressure of labeling it as a 'resolution'. No need to think twice about it. Simply write instead of checking your Facebook, or checking e-mail, or washing that one or two or three dishes in the sink. All those things will still be there when you're done writing but your inspirational spark will be lost, gone forever until another one is ignited. Take advantage of those rare moments. The little gems that fall out of nowhere. The golden nuggets that bonk you on your noggin. Give yourself permission to set all the mundane things aside and do what you most desire which is simply to write. It doesn't have to be three hundred word paragraphs either. Don't place word counts on your prose because these will stifle your flow. Let your creative energy be the judge of what and how much write. You will be amazed at the results! So for now, toss those resolutions and start creating solutions because your writing deserves them!
Thank you Vanessa, for the permission to just write.
ReplyDeleteNo pressure. The writer in me needs that sometimes.
I can't tell you how many times I have distracted myself with silly little chores instead of going with my flow. You're right. The dirt ain't goin' nowhere; unfortunately. But my inspiration will up and leave if I don't tend to it.

ReplyDeleteSo glad that you're inspired to simply write. It's an everyday struggle but you'll be happy in the end :)
